Kathmandu. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has returned after meeting President Vidya Bhandari at his residence. Details of the meeting between the President and the Prime Minister are yet to come.

Before going to meet President Bhandari, Oli had called an emergency meeting of the CPN-UML Standing Committee in Baluwatar. During the meeting, Oli briefed about the situation in Lumbini. In Lumbini, a no-confidence motion was filed against Chief Minister Shankar Pokhrel in the state assembly. Pokharel had resigned from the post in the morning even though it was said that the proposal would be tabled today. Since then, the Shankar government in Lumbini has been in crisis. The arithmetic of forming a new government in Lumbini has now begun. After Lumbini Provincial Assembly member Vimala Wali selected the CPN-Maoist center, the way to form a single UML government in Lumbini has been blocked. Out of the current 81 members, Wali has chosen the UCPN (Maoist) center and the UML has only 40 members. Wali has also applied for party membership in the parliamentary party of the Maoist center. Today, Chief Minister Pokharel resigned to quell a no-confidence motion against him and prepare to form a single-majority government. Pokharel, who became the chief minister in accordance with Article 168 (2), had demanded to form a government under Article 168 (1). With Wiley choosing the UCPN (M) center, the UML's path to a single-majority government is over. The Prime Minister has convened a cabinet meeting in Baluwatar this evening.
