आश्विन शुक्ल नवमी के दिन, हिंदू खुशी के साथ महानवमी त्योहार मना रहे हैं। महानवमी में दुर्गा भवानी की पूजा करने और आहुति देने की परंपरा है।

महानवमी के दिन दुर्गा पूजा करने के बाद, घाटस्थाना के दिन रखा जाने वाला जामरा विभिन्न शक्ति पीठों को चढ़ाया जाता है दुर्गा भवानी, दुर्गा सप्तशती, श्रीमद् देवी भागवत और देवी स्तोत्र की विशेष पूजा दशरहर और कोट सहित विभिन्न मंदिरों और शक्ति पीठों में की जाती है।

मार्कंडेय पुराण के अनुसार, महानवमी का त्योहार विशेष महत्व के साथ मनाया जाता है क्योंकि उसी दिन चामुंडा देवी ने राकविजा राक्षस का वध किया था। कुछ शक्तिपीठों में आज भी बत्तख, मुर्गी, बकरी, भेड़ और बछड़ों की बलि दी जाती है।

महानवमी के अवसर पर, कोट पूजा और निषान पूजा भी कोटों में हर्षोल्लास के साथ की जाती है इस अवसर पर, हनुमान ढोका दरबार के साथ-साथ बजरंग सहित नेपाल सेना के बैरकों और गुलामों को भी लक्ष्य की पूजा करने और कोट की पूजा करने की प्रथा है।
