Nepali apples did not find a market, import of four and a half billion from abroad

With the onset of the apple picking season in Nepal, there are reports of apples not finding a market every year, apples being fed to livestock, being sold at low prices, and difficulties in transportation.

On the other hand, Nepali consumers are consuming apples grown in the United States, China, India and Indonesia. Consumers are compelled to eat foreign apples as the transportation and market of Nepali apples is not ensured due to weak government preparations.

The government has been saying that it will replace the import by increasing the production of fruit products including apples and managing the market.

According to the customs department, 65.25 million kg of apples worth Rs 4.60 billion have been imported in the fiscal year 076/77. In the first two months of the current fiscal year 077/78, apples worth Rs 815.76 million have been imported from China, India and Indonesia alone.

The country consumes about 84,000 metric tons of apples annually. Last year, 60,060 kg of apples worth Rs 1.17 million were imported not only from neighboring China and India but also from the United States.
