Sher Bahadur Deuba, Ram Chandra Poudel and Krishna Prasad Sitaula, who were contesting for the post of president in the 13th general convention of the Nepali Congress, are facing difficulties when they reach the juncture of the 14th general convention. Candidates for the post of General Secretary from the same panel in the 13th General Convention have been seen as the biggest challenge for the leaders.

Deuba, who took over the party leadership from the 13th general convention held four and a half years ago, has been protesting against the failure of the party to run the organization as per the constitution. In this context, questioning the fairness of the General Convention, only on Monday, 27 central members submitted their protest letter to the Central Office, Sanepa. It has also been signed by Arjun Narasimha KC, who became the general secretary candidate from the Deuba panel in the previous general convention. Not only the other side of the establishment, but also the leaders including KC near Deubanik are not satisfied with his working style.

A challenge has been added to Deuba after his close leader and vice-president Bimalendra Nidhi also started preparing for the post. Nidhi said that the party leadership should be unanimously selected from the upcoming general convention to fight the communists and urged Deuba to help him.

According to the leaders of the establishment party, if both Deuba and Nidhi compete for the leadership, the result of the general convention will not be in their favor in the current situation.

Not only Chairman Deuba, but another leader Poudel is also in the same problem. Despite his age and political participation, his counterpart Deuba became the prime minister and party president. At the age of 75, it is most challenging for him to be the sole candidate of the dissidents. In the 13th General Convention, Sushil Koirala's legacy candidate Poudel Deuba was defeated.

Leaders including Ananda Prasad Dhungana, Chinkaji Shrestha and Govinda Bhattarai, who had joined the 13th General Convention, have left with Poudel. Even more problematic is Poudel's claim to be the chairman of Shashank Koirala, who was elected general secretary from his own group. BP's son Shashank has been claiming that his candidature for the presidency is a political compulsion and he is the only candidate who can defeat Deuba. Even though Poudel is older than him in terms of age and political experience, Shashank understands that he cannot snatch leadership from Deuba.

Not only that, former general secretary and Ganeshman's son Prakash Man Singh has also put forward himself as a candidate for the post. Singh said that his candidature for the chairmanship was natural as he had taken over the responsibilities other than the chairman and the prime minister. Shekhar Koirala, Ram Sharan Mahat, Arjun Narasimha KC and others have been showing aspiration for leadership. Convincing them all has become a big challenge for Poudel.

Arjun Narasimha KC has appeared for Deuba, Shashank Koirala for Poudel and Gagan Thapa for Sitaula.

After the death of the then President Sushil Koirala at the juncture of the 13th General Convention, Poudel was rejected and the then General Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula had given his candidature for the post of President. Sitaula's candidature had put Poudel in a difficult position and made it easier for Deuba to reach the leadership. It is not yet clear what the role of Sitaula, who has been presenting as the third faction within the party after the general convention, will be in the upcoming general convention.

Although Sitaula seems flexible towards Deuba, he is close to Poudel. In particular, Gagan Thapa, who became the general secretary candidate from the Sitaula faction in the 13th general convention, is in the strategy of becoming the general secretary candidate from the Deuwaitar group in the upcoming general convention as well. Central members Pradip Poudel and Umakanta Chaudhary have analyzed that the party will not be able to face the current challenge from Deuba. Shiva Humagain, a central member of the Sitaula group, has joined the Deuba group. Thapa, who also opposed Deuba in the parliamentary elections held after the 2074 general election, had pressured Sitaula to sign the protest letter registered by the Poudel group on Monday, but Sitaula did not seem ready for it.

Leaders including Thapa and Poudel have come to the conclusion that signing without Sitaula's participation will only weaken the power. Sitaula has also been under pressure when it comes to the strategy of using each other before the General Convention. Thus, all the three leaders who have become candidates for the presidency in the 13th General Convention have seen their close ones become a challenge to the 14th General Convention.
